About

MakangaidzeGD is a registered charity based in Zimbabwe and Australia, founded in 1998 by the late Gideon Dhliwayo, alongside his wives Petunia and Gladys Dhliwayo.

Gideon, born and raised in Zamchiya, Chipinge, was passionate about giving back to his community. In 1998, he and his wives launched an annual sports tournament to unite and uplift the people of Zamchiya—honouring both local culture and community spirit.

Although he later moved to the city, Gideon remained deeply connected to his roots. He named the tournament Makangaidze in tribute to his father, Moses “Makangaidze” Dhliwayo, whose athletic talent and tenacity inspired the nickname—meaning to destabilise or inhibit opponents.

Gideon sadly passed away from cancer in April 2013, before seeing these dreams fully realised.

But Gideon’s vision went far beyond sport. He dreamed of:

  • Developing the Zamchiya community
  • Supporting disadvantaged children
  • Building orphanages
  • Launching long-term developmental projects

Today, his wife and children continue his legacy by:

  • Running the annual Makangaidze Tournament
  • Formally registering the charity in Zimbabwe and Australia
  • Progressing efforts to build orphanages and run community projects
